Halloween Party, Persian Style (Oct 29th)

You might have noticed that we at the PSO and Persian Panthers are doing things a little bit differently this year, trying to keep things fresh and interesting, especially for those of you who have been with us for a while. This time, to celebrate our Iranian-American identity, we thought we'd try celebrating an American holiday, but with a Persian twist. Now, can you think of a better holiday to start out with than Halloween? Well, we couldn't either.

Please join us next Saturday for our first Persian-style Halloween Party! The Persian part comes in with the costumes (it is a Halloween party, after all) ... the idea is, you'll want to wear something that's somehow related to Persian culture, either past or present. We're setting the focus on costumes that are javad, jelf, khaz or whatever (if you don't know what those mean, ask an Iranian friend), but you're not limited to that; you can come as a famous Iranian character, dressed in some mahalli outfit, or whatever!

Now, be as creative as you'd like with the costume, because there will be a costume contest and you can model your costume on the catwalk! There will also be a dance contest; however, it's not about how well you dance, it's about how javad you dance. The winner of each contest will take home a gift card.

Nowruz Celebration

Please join us in our Nowruz ceremony, the ancient (and modern) Persian New Year celebrating the first day of Spring. There will be Persian traditional dinner, a series of very entertaining performances and afterwards we will get to dance till we drop. Here are the details:

Also appearing will be his personal friend Reza Allahyari, an international broadcaster with Voice of America.

Backgammon Tournament

Rule #1: The first rule is that any rule can be introduced, changed or overridden if the two players agree on it. Basically, the two people playing a game can play it any way they want.

Rule #2: In case of a disagreement or dispute, rules of play default to those laid out in http://www.bkgm.com/rules.html, with the exception of doubling. There is no doubling in these tournaments, except when allowed by Rule #1.

Some particular points of contention that have arisen over the past few tournaments bear mention. Again, these are only defaults and can be changed or ignored if both players wish:

* Rolling: A valid roll is one where the dice are rolled from a cup and both land flat in the right-hand half of the board (the rolling player's right). Any invalid roll should be re-rolled.
* Hit-and-run: After hitting with a checker, the player may move the checker in the same turn, regardless of the position of the checker on the board or any other circumstances.
* Loss, Gammon and Backgammon: If the losing player has borne off at least one checker, he loses only one point. However, if the loser has not borne off any of his checkers, he is gammoned and loses two points. If the loser has not borne off any of his checkers and still has a checker on the bar or in the winner's home board, he is backgammoned and loses three points.

Yalda Celebration

The winter break is coming up (and the winter weather is already here) and we're all anxious to get to our traveling, celebrating, relaxing or whatever else it is we might be planning on doing. But before we all scatter, let's get together for our annual Yalda celebration! Here are the details:

Time: 8:00 PM - midnight
Location: The Assembly Room in the University of Pittsburgh's William Pitt Union
Admission Fee: $5 for students, $10 for non-students (to be collected at the door)

Food: There won't be a full dinner, but we will have fruit (including, of course, pomegranate and watermelon), nuts, tea and sweets and, last but not least, osh-e reshte.

The plan for this year will be slightly different from years past, in that we're going to focus more on performances. Before 10:00 PM, we'll have live traditional music, poetry readings, a presentation or two and some other features; after 10:00 PM, there will be the usual pop music and dancing.

RSVPs are required for this event because we need to know for how many to plan. Please RSVP to pso@andrew.cmu.edu no later than Monday, December 13th if you're planning on coming. We hope that you are :)

Heritage Holidays at Heinz History Center

This weekend is the third annual Heritage Holidays Weekend! Backgammon Tournament

Hello everyone!

Question: What is November a perfect month for in Pittsburgh?

Answer: Indoor activities.

That's why the PSO and Persian Panthers will be hosting their fourth backgammon tournament next Saturday. We're experimenting with a slightly different setup this time; here are the details:

Tournament:
Date: Saturday, November 13th, 2010
Time: 1:00 PM
Location: Gates-Hillman Center, room 4405 (on the CMU campus)
Admission: $3 to play, $0 to watch
Food: Tea and cookies available
Prizes: As always, first through third place win gift cards

Aaaannnnddd ... (drum roll) ...

Lunch:
Food: ghorme-sabzi (with rice, salad and drinks)
Time: 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM
Price: $10 a plate

So instead of the usual pizza, we have the option of having Rose Catering (who catered the wonderful meal for our Cultural Festival last month) serve Iranian food there. The only issue is that there would have to be enough interest to make it worthwhile, so we need to know beforehand how many people would like to buy a nice Iranian meal to go with their game. If not enough people are interested, we might revert back to the old format.

So, please send an e-mail to pso@andrew.cmu.edu by next Monday night (November 8th) and let us know if you will be playing in the tournament, buying lunch or both.

Persian Cultural Festival

We at Persian Panthers and PSO - the Persian cultural organizations of Pitt and CMU - are proud to announce that we are going to have the first Persian Cultural Festival in Pittsburgh in years - if not first ever. We are partnering with the well-known local organization, the Waffle Shop, for the event. Many of you already know them through the Kubideh Kitchen. The festival is going to be held on Saturday, Oct. 2nd from 5:30pm until midnight at the Waffle Shop (No, NOT Pitt/CMU campus!) and a lounge next door. o Ask and answer questions about Iran’s culture. Chat with anybody you like or join the group discussion.
* 9:30pm-12am: Dance to the Persian beats!

Additional notes:
1. As you see, the program is not final. So if you are interested to contribute to the event, specially if you play Persian musical instruments, can perform traditional dance, or can do a quick cooking show, we would like to hear from you. We will do our best to include it in the program if you let us know as soon as possible.
2. Please note that the festival coincides with our annual Mehregan celebration and we have decided to merge the two events.
3. Compared to PSO and Persian Panthers regular celebrations, this event would be a bit more casual. Also, there would be a limited number of seats which means you might have to enjoy your dinner while standing. We do understand it may not be very comfortable and apologize about it; but we believe it would provide a greater chance of mixing with the people over there which we hope you would find appealing.

Spring is coming, and something is blooming in Pittsburgh! The City of Pittsburgh is officially recognizing Norouz in a proclamation, expressing appreciation to Iranian-Americans for their contributions to our society and wishing Iranian-Americans and the people of Iran a prosperous new year. This happened on March 9th at the City Council meeting, and will be followed by a reception and celebration on March 19th.

We at the Persian Panthers and PSO gladly and whole-heartedly support this recognition. Therefore, our plans for celebrating Norouz are going to be a little different from what you're used to, but hopefully just as much fun.

Backgommon Tournament - Sunday Jan 10th 2010

Happy New Year! We hope that you have enjoyed the holidays. We have organized a backgammon tournament as our first event for 2010. Come enjoy a friendly backgammon tournament with your friends and family along with pizza and refreshments.

Yalda Celebration Party!!

Shab-e Yaldā (Persian: یلدا) or Shab-e Chelleh (Persian: شب چله) is an Iranian festival originally celebrated on the Northern Hemisphere's longest night of the year, that is, on the eve of the Winter Solstice. Read more.

Persian Student Organization (PSO) and Persian Panthers invite you to this year's Yalda Celebration, held in observation of the ancient Iranian tradition. We will have fruits, nuts, and food, read some beautiful Hafez poems, listen to live Persian traditional music, and then dance to the not-so-traditional music until midnight. So, come have some fun and enjoy a great start to the holiday season!

Mehregan Celebration Party (جشن مهرگان)

The time has come for the us to have our first major event of the academic year, Mehregan celebration We'll be doing what we usually do: getting a group of people together, having some food and dancing 'till midnight to Persian music. So, if you're tired of working/studying, come have some fun! If you're new to the area, come meet some new people! If you haven't seen some of us for a while, come down and catch up! If none of the above apply to you, come anyway! Here are the details:
Time: Saturday night, October 17th, starting at 7:00 PM.
Location: Rangos 1 room on the second floor of CMU's University Center
Admission fee: $5 for students and $15 for non-students
