Backgammon Tournament
And the first PSO event of the new year has finally arrived! Join us for our fifth backgammon tournament this Sunday and kick off the new year playing an old game with moderately-aged friends.
Details follow:
Date: Sunday, January 16th, 2011
Time: 12:30 PM, play starts at 1:15 PM sharp
Location: Connan Room (first floor of CMU's University Center)
Admission fee: $5 to play, nothing to watch
Food: Pizza for lunch, then tea and cookies afterward
RSVP: If you plan on coming, please do let us know by the day before so we have a rough head count

P.S. There has been some ambiguity about the rules in the past ... not any more!
Rules of the PSO/Persian Panthers Backgammon Tournaments:
Rule #1: The first rule is that any rule can be introduced, changed or overridden if the two players agree on it. Basically, the two people playing a game can play it any way they want.
Rule #2: In case of a disagreement or dispute, rules of play default to those laid out in http://www.bkgm.com/rules.html, with the exception of doubling. There is no doubling in these tournaments, except when allowed by Rule #1.
Some particular points of contention that have arisen over the past few tournaments bear mention. Again, these are only defaults and can be changed or ignored if both players wish:
* Rolling: A valid roll is one where the dice are rolled from a cup and both land flat in the right-hand half of the board (the rolling player's right). Any invalid roll should be re-rolled.
* Hit-and-run: After hitting with a checker, the player may move the checker in the same turn, regardless of the position of the checker on the board or any other circumstances.
* Loss, Gammon and Backgammon: If the losing player has borne off at least one checker, he loses only one point. However, if the loser has not borne off any of his checkers, he is gammoned and loses two points. If the loser has not borne off any of his checkers and still has a checker on the bar or in the winner's home board, he is backgammoned and loses three points.
